Coke, Pepsi, Tab and Other Sodas Rob from Your Bones
So many come to my bone health workshops because they are worried about getting osteoporosis or know they already have it. Most question how their bone mass has deteriorated, perhaps thinking it was a fluke. One of the major culprits, however, can be the phosphoric acid in soft drinks such as Pepsi, Coke and Tab. The acid leaches the minerals from the bones, gnawing away at them until they start looking like swiss cheese. Bones should look more like a natural sponge, small holes, not gaping ones.
It is so sad to learn that teenagers are now developing osteoporosis. Perhaps part of the reason is that they do not get enough of the right kind of exercise for bone building — the soles striking the ground, from walking or running, for example. But, we must also realize that those teens and young adults who drink the “big gulp” soda size are consuming a lot more than just the 10 teaspoons of sugar found in a can of soda.
